The foundation of fairness in MindLab is consequentialist. We reject the flawed paradigm of applying abstract, axiomatic fairness rules, which has been proven to lead to Pareto-dominated outcomes that are worse for all stakeholders. Instead, our platform provides the tools for organizations to define, enforce, and audit their own policies based on auditable, real-world outcomes. Our approach is based on Counterfactual Fairness. The Capsule manifest for a procurement Capsule, for example, requires the creator to declare their causal assumptions, which the Proving Ground then audits to ensure the system’s recommendations are invariant to changes in protected attributes.
